COSMOSWORKS WHATSNEW

Design New and Innovative Products

Cyclic Symmetry:  Cyclic Symmetry is a load/restraint option that allows users to model a portion of a model when there are features that repeat in a circular pattern.

Sensors: Sensors are predefined locations in a COSMOSWorks model that allow for easily retrievable result
quantities such as stress and displacement on a repeatable basis. The results at sensors can be saved per plot and displayed while printing. They can also be used to query local reaction forces.

Spot Weld Between Solids & Shells: Spot Weld Connector functionality introduced in COSMOSWorks 2006 has been expanded to support mixed meshes by allowing users to connect shells to solids.

Bolt Connector with Large Displacement:  Bolt Connector can now be used in models with large displacement analysis.

New Animation Options: COSMOSWorks now allows users to animate results forward-only instead of the standard forwardbackward animation sequence. AVI files with this
new sequence can be saved as well.

Increased Intelligence in Frequency Solutions: COSMOSWorks can now automatically account for loading effects in a modal analysis if there are loads applied to the model. Additionally, COSMOSWorks will automatically capture rigid body (0 hz) modes when using direct sparse solver. Finally, COSMOSWorks can simulate the effect of temperature distribution on mode shapes.

Restart Option for Nonlinear Analysis:  Nonlinear analysis users can now stop a solution, make changes to solver options, time curves, end time, or autostep time increments, and then restart the analysis from that step instead of starting from the beginning of the solution.

Nonlinear Analysis—Follower Loads and Friction: COSMOSWorks now allows users update load direction with deflection (follower loads) for pressure and torque loads. Friction effects can also be included in nonlinear analysis.

Pin Connector for Nonlinear Analysis: Pin connector is now available for nonlinear analysis. Pin connector simulates the behavior of the pin to transfer loads between two components in an assembly. It is not necessary to include the pin component in the simulation.

Focus on Product Design, Not Design Tools

Custom Results Plots and Tree Structure: COSMOSWorks now allows users to specify which plots and results folder structure will be created by default after an analysis has run. Users can also
customize the name of the plots and folders.

Automatic Solver Selection:  COSMOSWorks can now automatically choose the appropriate solver for a model depending on the analysis type, mesh type and size of the model.

Define Limits on Values in Analysis Library:  Analysis library introduced in COSMOSWorks 2006 is now enhanced to support limits. One user can set a upper and/or lower limit for analysis library values to generate fail proof templates for other users in the design team.

Envelope Plots: COSMOSWorks 2007 allows users to plot the maximum or minimum result value at a given location in a model across several results sets for transient thermal, drop test, and nonlinear analyses. Probing the envelope plot the output value as well as the time step value.

Toggle Results Button: A new button has been added to the Results Toolbar to allow users to toggle between SolidWorks
model and COSMOSWorks results plot.

Solve Large Problems: COSMOSWorks now supports x64 operating system and /3GB switch available in 32 bit OS. This allows user to solver larger problems due to the availability
of 3GB memory in 32 bit OS and higher memory limit for 64 bit OS. On 64 bit OS, COSMOSWorks can solve models with as much as 30 million degrees of freedom.
Adaptive Analysis for Assemblies: h-adaptive technology introduced in COSMOSWorks 2006 is now enhanced to support assemblies. With h-adaptive COSMOSWorks will automatically converge to correct results through an iterative process.  In each iteration, the mesh in critical areas is automatically refined to produce correct results.
Mesh Quality Plots:  Users can now create mesh quality plots such as aspect ratio and distortion of elements (Jacobian
Check). Plot tools such as section clipping, iso clipping and probe are also available for these plots to better isolate the areas with unacceptable distortion or aspect ratio.
Mesh and Analysis Time Statistics: COSMOSWorks can now make an estimate of run time remaining in a solution and display it in the solver status window. COSMOSWorks also records the time taken to complete the mesh to help the
users develop a database of resource requirements for a variety of model types and machines.
Access to the SolidWorks Flyout FeatureManager and Viewport Options:  COSMOSWorks now allows users to pick form the flyout feature manager tree. Users may also access
the SolidWorks viewport options when viewing analysis results.
Easier to Position Color Chart and Change Max/Min Range:  In COSMOSWorks 2007, users can position the color chart to any location on the screen by simply dragging the chart. Additionally, the dialog box for chart settings is then active so a user can redefine the legend limits on the fly without using the RMB functionality.
Drag Section Clipping Handles: COSMOSWorks now allows users to drag the section clipping planes by providing drag handles on the results plots.
Default True Scale Deformation for Models with Contact: COSMOSWorks 2007 gives flexibility to the users to preset default deformation scaling for results plots to “True Scale” or 1:1, for models involving large displacement or contact.
Free Body Forces: COSMOSWorks now allows users to request free body forces between parts connected with bonded
contact.
Reaction Moments on Shells: COSMOSWorks users can now list reaction moment results in addition to reaction forces on thin walled parts and assemblies modeled using shell mesh.
Print Using File | Print:  SolidWorks File > Print can now print COSMOSWorks results plot if it is active on the screen. Users can also save the results plots as JPEG and TIFF using the SolidWorks command: File > Save As.
Double-Click on Symbols to Edit: Load, restraint, and mesh control symbols can now be edited simply by double-clicking them on the screen. This provides an easier access to edit these feature instead of accessing them from COSMOSWorks analysis tree.
Display Stress Above Yield in Specific Color: COSMOSWorks can now plot vonMises stress above yield strength in a distinctive color to highlight areas of potential failure. Users have the flexibility to specify the highlight color.
Capture Analysis Results with SolidWorks Animator: COSMOSWorks users can now use SolidWorks animator to rotate, explode or collapse assemblies for models with COSMOSWorks analysis results and capture them as AVI files for use in presentations. Users can also combine the above with camera to visualize the analysis results from the camera perspective.

Be First to Exploit Innovative Design Tools

Weldment Analysis—Structural Members as Beams: Weldments created in SolidWorks can now be analyzed using more efficient beam elements. COSMOSWorks will automatically define the structural members as beam elements, derive beam cross section from solid geometry, and automatically detect the joint conditions.

Purchased Parts as Equivalent Mass: Users are typically not interested in the stress results of purchased parts, instead users want to consider the effect of this part on the rest of the assembly. Now, they can represent these purchased parts as equivalent mass. COSMOSWorks creates mass elements automatically based on the mass properties and moment of inertial information from SolidWorks model.

Remote Mass: COSMOSWorks now allows users to represent certain purchased parts such as motors and actuators as remote mass. User don’t need to model these parts in SolidWorks, but instead they can consider the effect of these parts on rest of the assembly by specifying the mass and moments of inertia.

Bolt Connector—Automatic Face Splitting: COSMOSWorks can now automatically project the bolt diameter and nut diameter area onto the faces of components held together by bolts.

Connector—Tension or Compression Only Springs:   Existing spring connector has been enhanced to simulate tension only, and compression only springs. In addition, springs can now be defined between cylindrical faces or 2 points or vertices.

Bearing Connector: The Bearing Connector allows users to replace a physical bearing with a virtual component to duplicate the behavior of bearing. This Connector provides
ability to input local stiffness as well as free rotations.
